Newcastle Lengthen Relegation Odds With Birmingham Draw
Tuesday 18 March 2008 at 11:29 Newcastle's chances of staving off Premier League relegation have been improved after a battling draw with fellow strugglers Birmingham City ended a run of four straight defeats.
The Magpies are now rated at 4/1 with BlueSquare to be relegated to the Championship, while Birmingham are priced at 3/1 with Bet365 to go down.
And following the 1-1 draw, Toon manager Kevin Keegan claimed that Michael Owen, who scored Newcastle's goal, would be a key player in the relegation dog fight.
"A lot of people have been questioning him because he is a big-name player but he won't stop scoring if you give him chances," Keegan said.
"I am delighted to have a player like Michael at the club. His leadership and work-rate have been fantastic.
"He is a clinical finisher and a very clever player. Michael is top quality and a world-class player, make no mistake about that," he added.
The 28-year-old England striker has only netted seven times this season.
