Alonso Debates Quitting Renault
Wednesday 26 March 2008 at 17:31 Formula One ace Fernando Alonso is considering quitting team Renault just two races into the season.
The fiery Spaniard signed for Renault this winter after a turbulent year at McLaren, but has failed to start the new season as well as he would have liked, finishing fourth then eighth in Australian and Malaysia respectively.
The 26-year-old, who won the championship in 2005 and 2006, and finished third last year, is currently ranked seventh favourite to win this year, with best odds of 80/1 from Bet365, Betterbet, Bet Direct and Paddy Power.
Former team-mate Lewis Hamilton is favourite to win this year, with odds of 4/5 from VC, Paddy Power and William Hill.
Speaking with Spanish newspaper As, Alonso said: "I'm at Renault because I wanted to get back to winning like in 2005 and 2006, if not this year then next.
"But I have an option to leave so I can be in the best possible car, and it is clear Ferrari is one of the best."
It is believed that Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo thinks highly of Alonso and could be open to signing the Spaniard for the 2009 season.
