Mickelson Favourite At Quail Hollow
Thursday 01 May 2008 at 10:15
Phil Mickelson will start as favourite when a strong field tees up for the Wachovia Championship at Quail Hollow on Thursday.
The $6.4 million prize fund has attracted 19 of the top 25 players in the world rankings to head to North Carolina - but defending champion Tiger Woods is not among them, as he is still sidelined by a knee injury.
In the absence of Woods, world number two Mickelson has been installed as 10/1 favourite with Betfred.
The three-time major winner has been in good form this year, winning the Northern Trust Open and finishing fifth at the Masters. He also has a good track record at the Wachovia Championship, having tied for third last year.
Since the event began in 2003 it has been dominated by top players. Previous winners include Woods, Jim Furyk and Vijay Singh, while Steve Stricker, Trevor Immelman, Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia have all finished in the top three.
Singh is best-priced at 16/1 with Stan James to repeat his success, while Furyk is available at 18/1 with Partybets.
Scott, the winner of last week's Byron Nelson Championship, is best-priced at 16/1 with Paddy Power, while punters who fancy a first British winner can back Luke Donald at 40/1 and Justin Rose at 45/1 at Totesport.
