Coolmore Eye Derby For Henrythenavigator
Tuesday 06 May 2008 at 11:07
Aidan O'Brien has revealed that the owners of 2000 Guineas winner Henrythenavigator are keen for him to run in the Epsom Derby. The Coolmore colt chased down favourite New Approach in the closing stages of the season's first classic to win by a nose, but afterwards his trainer ruled out running him in June's Derby.
However, discussions with Coolmore supremo John Magnier have persuaded O'Brien to rethink his stance that Henrythenavigator could not stay the one-and-a-half-mile distance.
The 2000 Guineas winner is joint-third favourite for the Derby (best-priced at 12/1 with Boylesports) and O'Brien told the Independent he is confident the colt would perform well at Epsom, should Coolmore decide to enter him.
"Henrythenavigator has many of the qualities you need at Epsom. You have to have a horse that has speed, can travel and can quicken. And he has that tactical pace that means he can stay balanced," he explained.
Henry Cecil's Craven Stakes winner Twice Over is 4/1 favourite with Paddy Power for the Epsom showpiece, ahead of Beresford Stakes victor Curtain Call (7/1 with Skybet) and Casino At Bet365.com Classic Trial winner Centennial (12/1 at Stan James).
