Mickelson Aiming To Retain At Sawgrass

Phil Mickelson will attempt to become the first player in history to retain The Players Championship when play gets underway at Sawgrass on Thursday.
The world number two is 12/1 favourite with Partybets to win an event dubbed the unofficial fifth major, but must overcome a field containing 49 of the top 50 in the FedExCup standings. Tiger Woods is the one absent top player, as he is still sidelined by a knee injury.
Mickelson tied for 12th at last week's Wachovia Championship, but told the PGA Tour's website that he saw some positive signs his famous short game is coming back.
"Last week my putting was so much better. Every putt started on line, good speed. I expect to have a great week this week because it's getting better as time goes on," he explained.
Adam Scott, the winner in 2004 and sixth last year, is 14/1 second favourite with Stan James, while Wachovia Championship victor Anthony Kim is 40/1 at VC Bet.
Punters who fancy a first European success since Sandy Lyle's 1987 victory can back Open champion Padraig Harrington at 22/1 with Coral or last year's runner-up Sergio Garcia at 40/1 with Paddy Power.
