Murtagh Talks Up Sail For Epsom
Thursday 08 May 2008 at 09:53
Sail proved she is a genuine contender for the Epsom Oaks with victory at Chester on Wednesday, according to jockey Johnny Murtagh.
The Coolmore filly finished strongly to defeat the Barry Hills-trained Sugar Mint by half a length in the Cheshire Oaks and claim her first win in three starts.
Sail's price for the Epsom Oaks next month shortened at many bookmakers after her success, although she can still be backed at 16/1 with Ladbrokes.
Murtagh said a classic victory is a real possibility for Sail, even though he may not ride her at Epsom next month.
"She improved from her maiden and if she can improve again from her trial she would go to Epsom with a shout. She has speed, stays and would suit the track," he added.
Sugar Mint's connections have confirmed they still plan to enter her for The Oaks and she is 25/1 with Boylesports to go one better than she did at Chester. Dar Re Mi, winner of the Poker At Bet365.com Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Sandown last month, and Moonstone, runner-up to Winchester in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Maiden at Leopardstown on his debut, are 8/1 joint favourites with Paddy Power for the classic.
