Washington Irving Beaten At Leopardstown
Monday 12 May 2008 at 09:02 Washington Irving's price for the Epsom Derby has drifted significantly after he was well beaten in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown on Sunday.
The Dermot Weld-trained Casual Conquest won by six lengths from Aidan O'Brien's colt, with Kevin Prendergast's Moiqen a further length-and-a-half back in third.
Washington Irving was 10/1 for The Derby at a number of bookmakers before the trial, but went out to 25/1 with Stan James after his loss.
Casual Conquest is now best-priced at 7/1 with William Hill for the Epsom classic, but afterwards Weld revealed he is more likely to run in the French and Irish derbies than the English one.
Another of O'Brien's three-year-olds Alessandro Volta enjoyed a better weekend, winning Saturday's Totesport.com Derby Trial at Lingfield Park ahead of stable-mate King of Rome and Saeed Bin Suroor's Campanologist.
Alessandro Volta's odds for The Derby fell to 10/1 with several bookies after his win, but he can still be backed at 20/1 with Ladbrokes.
Derby favourite Twice Over (4/1 with Paddy Power) will get the chance to prove his credentials in the Dante Stakes at York on Thursday, but second-favourite Curtain Call (7/1 with Boylesports) will not run again until Epsom after Luca Cumani withdrew him from the Lingfield trial because of the firm ground.
