Twice Over A Doubt For The Dante
Wednesday 14 May 2008 at 12:16 Epsom Derby favourite Twice Over may not run in Thursday's Totesport.com Dante Stakes at York, trainer Henry Cecil has revealed.
The colt, who established himself as a leading contender for the classic by winning the Craven Stakes at Newmarket last month, is one of six entries for the Dante.
However, the going at the Knavesmire is expected to be good to firm on the first day of the meeting and if it is the same on Thursday, Cecil may opt to pull Twice Over out.
"He hits the ground hard and the ground will need to be safe. He wouldn't want it like a road," the trainer explained.
Should conditions at York be to Cecil's liking, Twice Over (best-priced 4/1 with Ladbrokes for The Derby) is likely to be tested by John Gosden's Centennial, who is 12/1 with Paddy Power for the Epsom showpiece after winning last month's Classic Trial at Sandown.
Tartan Bearer, a winner on his seasonal debut at Leicester, is the third leading Derby contender (14/1 at VC Bet) set to line-up in the Dante, with the field completed by Aidan O'Brien's Frozen Fire and Godolphin duo Young Pretender and McCartney.
