Nedved Says No To Euro 2008
Thursday 15 May 2008 at 09:24 Veteran midfielder Pavel Nedved has refused to come out of international retirement to play for the Czech Republic at the Euro 2008 finals.
Coach Karel Bruckner hoped to persuade the Juventus star to play in Austria and Switzerland this summer after Arsenal's Tomas Rosicky was ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury.
However, Nedved opted to stick by the decision he made to end his international career following a disappointing 2006 World Cup - a tournament he only played in after reversing his decision to leave the international stage after Euro 2004.
Bruckner did receive one piece of good news ahead of what promises to be a tough Group A campaign when Spartak Moscow defender Radoslav Kovac declared himself fit to take his place in the squad following shoulder surgery.
The Czechs are 8/13 with Bet365 to progress from a group that also contains Portugal, Turkey and Switzerland, and best-priced at 16/1 with Stan James to win Euro 2008.
Switzerland - 5/4 with Bet365 to qualify for the quarter-finals - also have problems ahead of the tournament, as Patrick Muller and Philipp Degen are both struggling with injuries.
Turkey - 21/10 with Totesport to progress - have fitness concerns about Servet Cetin and Gokhan Gonul, but Portugal - 15/2 fourth favourites with Paddy Power to lift the trophy - have all their big-name players available.
