McEwen Suggests Tour De France Will Be Tough Without Team
Thursday 03 July 2008 at 09:02 Tour de France great Robbie McEwen has admitted it will be difficult for him to win the Green Jersey this year without his team fully behind him.
The Silence-Lotto rider suggested to the AAP that with his team set up to help Cadel Evans win the Yellow Jersey, a fourth points competition victory is unlikely.
"It's not impossible, but it's improbable to win it totally alone," he commented.
"There's a lot more guess work, a lot more gambling and you need a bit more luck for it to work out."
McEwen won the Green Jersey in 2002, 2004 and 2006, putting him in joint-third place in the all-time rankings.
He is currently third favourite at the bookmakers to take a fourth sprint title in 2008, with Sportingbet rating his chances at 11/2.
Thor Hushovd is the most heavily backed at 9/4 with VC Bet, ahead of Oscar Freire (3/1, Sportingbet).
Meanwhile, McEwen's team-mate Evans is a strong favourite to win the Tour de France outright, with Boylesports offering 5/2 on the Australian.
Alejandro Valverde is expected to be his closest rival, with VC Bet offering 4/1 on the Caisse d'Epargne rider.
