LeMond Backs Evans To Win Tour De France
Tuesday 08 July 2008 at 09:04 Tour de France great Greg LeMond believes that Australia's Cadel Evans will win this year's race.
The three-time champion suggested to the Sydney Morning Herald that Evans was one of the best riders out there when performance-enhancing drug use was at its peak - and now with many of the cheats removed, he stands a great chance of victory.
"He was good - consistent, not at the top - during the height of all this doping issue. He might be the big talent [if] you start eliminating people getting the big advantage," he remarked.
Evans is 2/1 at Ladbrokes to win the Tour and could make his first major assault on the Yellow Jersey today during the 29 k/m time trial in Cholet.
The 31-year-old, who currently lies in ninth position in the race after three stages, finished second in both time trials last year.
Alejandro Valverde is expected by the bookmakers to be Evans's main rival, with William Hill rating his chances of overall victory at 11/4.
Valverde has already worn the Yellow Jersey in 2008, but has made mistakes in important time trials in the past.
