Mercury Music Prize Betting Begins
Wednesday 23 July 2008 at 08:48
Dubstep artist Burial has been installed as the favourite to win the 2008 Mercury Music Prize following the unveiling of the nominees yesterday.
SkyBet offers 9/2 that the London artist's Untrue album picks up the accolade, with In Rainbows by Radiohead considered to be its closest rival by the bookmaker at 11/2.
NME referred to Burial as "the bleeding-edge critics' choice", while noting that nobody has as much Mercury Music Prize experience as Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, who is up for his sixth award.
Elbow's The Seldom Seen Kid is 7/1 third favourite at Ladbrokes, while the same price is available on The Last Shadow Puppets' The Age of the Understatement at 888Sport.
The Last Shadow Puppets are fronted by Alex Turner, who won the Mercury Music Prize with Arctic Monkeys in 2006. It is the third year in a row that one of his bands has been nominated.
Other contenders include Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim (10/1, Blue Square), Estelle - Shine (Ladbrokes, 12/1), British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music£ (12/1, Ladbrokes), Adele - 19 (14/1, Ladbrokes) and Neon Neon - Stainless Style (14/1, Bet 365).
