Europe Favourites But Punters Back USA In Ryder Cup Stakes
Tuesday 16 September 2008 at 12:26
Punters are backing the USA to lift the Ryder Cup, despite Europe being the favourites.
That's according to William Hill, which said that betting on the tournament may reach its highest ever level this year.
Europe are offered at 4/5 by a number of bookies, including Ladbrokes, SkyBet and Sportingbet.
However, the best price punters can get is evens with Totesport and Betfred.
And both of them offer the same odds for the USA, although Coral, Ladbrokes, Sportingbet and Skybet all have Paul Azinger's side rated at 5/4.
William Hill, meanwhile, stated that the betting market is embracing the outsiders, although this may not continue.
"We have seen a swing away from Europe in the last few days with six four figure bets on team USA in the last 48 hours. That said, we would expect a patriotic punt on Europe before the start," said spokesman Rupert Adams.
Mr Adams predicted that £20 million could be bet on the Ryder Cup this year and William Hill itself has Europe favoured at 11/10, while USA are offered at 6/5.
