Ryder Cup Tactics Influencing Early Betting Market
Thursday 18 September 2008 at 09:58
Hints of Ryder Cup pairings have prompted bookies to change the odds ahead of the tournament, which begins tomorrow.
According to William Hill, Paul Azinger's suggestion that JB Holmes and Kenny Perry will be first out for the USA narrows the host's chances.
Earlier this week the bookmaker had the USA at 6/5 but spokesman Rupert Adams predicted that the Kentucky pair would struggle against the likely pairing of Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood.
"Azinger is taking a massive gamble putting out the local boys in the first pair and we have reacted by pushing USA out to 5/4," he remarked.
Europe are odds on favourites to defend the Ryder Cup with several bookies including Blue Square (8/11), Sportingbet (4/5) and Bet 365 (10/11).
Totesport, Betfred and Betfair all have Nick Faldo's side at evens, while the best price offered is 21/20 with Paddy Power.
Azinger's USA, meanwhile, are also offered at that price by Paddy Power, but are 13/10 outsiders with SkyBet.
Europe are also favourites to come out on top by the end of play tomorrow, with Sportingbet offering 10/11 for a day one victory, the hosts at 13/8.
