Alexander Ready For Penalties
Tuesday 13 May 2008 at 09:07 Rangers goalkeeper Neil Alexander has revealed he is preparing for Wednesday's Uefa Cup final against Zenit St Petersburg to be decided by a penalty shootout.
The Gers reached the Manchester final thanks largely to a resolute defence which did not concede a goal in either the quarter-final with Sporting Lisbon or last four tie against Fiorentina.
Rangers needed penalties to progress after failing to score against the Italian side and Walter Smith's side are 11/1 with Stan James to win the final in the same manner.
Alexander, who is only in the team because of an injury to first choice goalkeeper Allan McGregor, insisted he will be ready if it goes that far.
"It has already entered my head and obviously saving a penalty to win the cup would be the best thing in my career. It would be an unbelievable experience for me," said the former Cardiff City shot-stopper.
Zenit are 4/6 favourites with Skybet to lift the trophy, having already knocked out Villarreal, Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich.
However, the Russian side will be without the suspended Pavel Pogrebnyak who has found the net ten times in the competition, including twice in the 4-0 semi-final second leg drubbing of Bayern Munich.
In his absence, Andrei Arshavin and Jean-Claude Darcheville are 8/1 joint favourites with Ladbrokes to open the scoring. Those who fancy Rangers' defence to do the job again can get 8/1 at VC Bet on there being no goalscorer in the 90 minutes.
