Tartan Bearer Defeats Derby Favourite
Friday 16 May 2008 at 09:11 Tartan Bearer has emerged as a leading contender for the Epsom Derby after impressing when winning the Dante Stakes at York on Thursday.
Sir Michael-Stoute's colt beat Frozen Fire into second, with Craven Stakes winner Twice Over third and Classic Trial victor Centennial trailing home in fourth.
Three of the last four Dante winners have gone on to win the Epsom Derby and Tartan Bearer's price for the classic shortened to 4/1 with a number of bookmakers after the race. However, he can be backed at 7/1 with Paddy Power.
Frozen Fire's display also saw his odds slashed and having begun Thursday as a 40/1 shot for The Derby, Aidan O'Brien's colt finished it best-priced at 10/1 with Ladbrokes.
The previously unbeaten Twice Over had been a strong favourite for the classic but his disappointing display means he is now unlikely to run at Epsom.
Trainer Henry Cecil said: "Whether he needs to come back in distance or not, I don't know. It is up to the Prince [Khalid Abdullah], but I don't think he will run in the Derby now."
Meanwhile, the owners of Casual Conquest have indicated the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner is likely to run at Epsom, despite trainer Dermot Weld seemingly being reluctant to enter him for the classic.
