French Open Men's Singles Last Ten Winners
Here's a table showing the last ten French Open Men's winners including the beaten finalist and set score:
Year | Champion (WR) | Runner Up (WR) | Set Score |
---|---|---|---|
2023 | Novak Djokovic (3) | Casper Ruud (4) | 3-0 |
2022 | Rafael Nadal (5) | Casper Ruud (8) | 3-0 |
2021 | Novak Djokovic (1) | Stefanos Tsitsipas (5) | 3-2 |
2020 | Rafael Nadal (2) | Novak Djokovic (1) | 3-0 |
2019 | Rafael Nadal (2) | Dominic Thiem (4) | 3-1 |
2018 | Rafael Nadal (1) | Dominic Thiem (8) | 3-0 |
2017 | Rafael Nadal (4) | Stan Wawrinka (3) | 3-0 |
2016 | Novak Djokovic (1) | Andy Murray (2) | 3-1 |
2015 | Stan Wawrinka (9) | Novak Djokovic (1) | 3-1 |
2014 | Rafael Nadal (1) | Novak Djokovic (2) | 3-1 |
A near French Open dominance for Rafael Nadal may be coming to an end as Rafa failed to make the French Open in 2023 due to injury and the Spaniard has indicated 2024 will likely be his last year on the ATP Tour. Rafa has won the French Open title on fourteen occasions since 2005, the blank years being 2009 (4th round defeat to Robin Soderling), 2015 (Quarter Final defeat to Novak Djokovic), he withdrew with an injury after the second round in 2016 and a semi final defeat to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and was absent in 2023.
- No player outside the top 9 in the world has made the French Open final in the last ten years.
- Seven finals were contested by players both ranked in the top 5 in the world.
So finding an each way long shot to make the final outside of the world's top ten would have been largely fruitless.
French Open Men's Singles Ten Year Trends
Obviously the winners trends for six of the last ten years focus solely on Rafa Nadal, however it's worth noting particularly the clay court form of potential challengers in the main lead up events in Rome, Barcelona, Madrid and Monte Carlo.

2023 | Iga Swiatek (1) | Karolina Muchova (43) | 2-1 |
2022 | Iga Swiatek (1) | Coco Gauff (23) | 2-0 |
2021 | Barbora Krejcikova (33) | A. Pavlyuchenkova (32) | 2-1 |
2020 | Iga Swiatek (54) | Sofia Kenin (6) | 2-0 |

2015 | Serena Williams (1) | Lucie Safarova (13) | 2-1 |
2014 | Maria Sharapova (8) | Simona Halep (4) | 2-1 |
Iga Swiatek secured her third French Open title victory in 2023 and became the first player to retain the French Open Women's Singles title since Justine Henin in 2007.
Interesting to note the better ranked player of the two finalists has won only five of the last ten finals, we have seen Jelena Ostapenko win in 2017 ranked just inside the top 50, Marketa Vondrousova make the final in 2019 when ranked just inside the top 40 and 2020 saw world number 54 Iga Swiatek (now a three time French Open winner) stun the tennis world with a straight sets win over Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. The 2021 final saw Barbora Krejcikova ranked 33 defeat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova ranked 32.
- Two winners since 2017 had previously progressed no further than the 2nd round at the French Open, Ostapenko had not made it past the 1st round.
- Predicting the finalists has been a little tricky with just three of the last ten finals contested by two players in the current top ten in the world.

2017 | Ostapenko | 2R | DNP | 1R |
2016 | Muguruza | SF | 2R | QF |
