Horse Racing Trainers to Follow this Month [May 2024]

May

A winning April but not enough to get us in front for the year, we currently sit at around (25.00) LSL.

May brings the first classics and the Derby trials, the NH season starts again and the evening racing calendar kicks in.  Plenty to go at and 9 trainers, 3 return from last year.

GB TURF

JOHN & THADY GOSDEN (ALL)

The trainer who has appeared in this blog more than any other over the years, now training with his son but still firing out the winners.

  • 2018     21/78     27%     (£ 0.62)

  • 2019     22/90     24%    +£ 9.43

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     11/71     15%     (£33.50)

  • 2022     17/69     25%     (£ 2.75)

  • 2023     17/63     27%    +£25.63

These might not look the best on first glance but 2018 (21 winners) and 2022 (17 winners) means we can expect to add 10-20 extra profit with early prices compared to the SP figures.  2021 was when Thady first entered the partnership and this could have had some effect.  Last year was much more like it and at the time of writing his last 6 runners have won.

AIDEN O’BRIEN (ALL)

The Cashel maestro will send plenty over for Newmarket and will have loads of runners in the subsequent Derby trials; don't be surprised if he lands some with his second or third strings.

  • 2017     7/23     30%     +£ 1.50

  • 2018     6/34     18%      (£11.94)

  • 2019     5/28     18%     +£ 6.25

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     4/18     22%     +£12.83

  • 2022     6/15     40%     +£13.33

  • 2023     6/18     33%     +£  0.76

Solid stuff, our early price figures were +£3.57, remember just his GB runners.

CHARLIE HILLS (ALL)

Lambourn trainer who returns from last month where he made a small loss with his older horses.

  • 2018     11/57     19%     +£21.08

  • 2019     10/62     16%      (£ 0.62)

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     4/52         8%      (£39.55)

  • 2022     10/41     24%     +£27.82

  • 2023      9/53      17%     +£15.23

We just need to avoid a year like 2021, on the evidence of the last two years there is every possibility.

GARY MOORE (3YO+)

Back from last year where he gave a small profit with his non 2yo’s.

  • 2017     5/24     21%     +£44.00

  • 2018     5/28     18%     +£39.00

  • 2019     6/34     18%     +£16.50

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     4/22     18%     +£ 8.33

  • 2022     3/25     12%      (£ 9.42)

  • 2023     9/36     25%     +£20.65

I must have missed a good winner last year because I’ve only recorded 8 winners and our profit was 16 points lower than the SP figures which suggests it was 16’s+....ouch.

GRANT TUER (3yo+)

North Yorkshire blog virgin, trains a lot of the Nick Bradley racing horses, has some nice May figures.

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     7/26     27%     +£11.16

  • 2022     3/39      8%      +£12.50

  • 2023     7/33     21%     +£21.10

Decent stuff and comes into the month with 3 winners from the last 5 runners, he’ll give some interest at the northern tracks.

GB NH

DAN SKELTON (ALL)

Fresh from his title tilt, usually gets off to a good start, hopefully more so this season with him just missing out this year.

  • 2018     30/99     30%     +£25.62

  • 2019     22/69     32%      (£10.47)

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     9/43       21%     +£ 5.61

  • 2022     17/48     35%     +£ 3.71

  • 2023     9/50       18%     +£46.60

Cracking stuff, I just hope going full tilt at the back end of the season doesn’t affect his early season figures.

FERGAL O’BRIEN (ALL)

Has had a fantastic season, usually gets off to a flyer.

  • 2017     5/22       23%       +£12.25

  • 2018     5/32       16%        (£16.00)

  • 2019     7/28       25%       +£12.36

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     16/55     29%       +£40.66

  • 2022     17/79     22%        (£12.55)

  • 2023     20/62     32%       +£45.16

Also had a positive LSP in 2015 and 2016, March and April were winning months for the Gloucestershire trainer, no reason why it should change.

SEAMUS MULLINS (NON CHASE)

Wiltshire trainer who has provided a profit in each of the last two seasons with his Hurdle and Bumper runners.

  • 2017     4/26     15%     +£14.33

  • 2018     8/28     28%     +£15.50

  • 2019     5/30     17%     +£ 2.83

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     5/20     24%     +£ 2.00

  • 2022     1/11       9%     +£15.00

  • 2023     2/19     11%     +£12.50

We had his 2 winners at 25’s and 14’s last year so our profit was +£21.00, he had loads that outran their odds at massive prices.

JONJO O’NEILL (ALL)

Cheltenham stalwart who frequents the blog now and again.

  • 2017     12/68     18%      (£ 3.22)

  • 2018      7/62      11%     +£14.00

  • 2019      7/37      19%     +£ 0.48

  • 2020      Covid

  • 2021      8/52      15%      (£27.65)

  • 2022      6/27      22%     +£15.58

  • 2023      8/30      27%     +£10.78

Decent figures and getting better in recent years, only one really bad year when you consider 2017 would have been profitable with early prices.

RESULTS

As always, any comments please leave below, good luck.

Horse Racing Trainers to Follow April 2024

April

GB NH

PAUL NICHOLLS (ALL)

Crack trainer who is in a 3 way battle for the trainers championship, he’ll be firing plenty of ammo at the big races this month and has finished the season on a high in recent years.

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     25/90     28%     (£ 3.77)

  • 2022     18/68     26%    +£ 9.30

  • 2023     18/80     23%    +£48.93

The loss in 2021 would almost certainly be a profit using early prices with 25 winners and comes into the month on the back of a winning March.

MATT SHEPPARD (NON BUMPER)

Back from last year where he made a small profit.

  • 2014     1/3     33%     +£10.00

  • 2015     2/7     29%     +£15.50

  • 2016     4/15   27%     +£15.13

  • 2017     3/18   17%     +£  4.38

  • 2018     4/10   40%     +£  8.00

  • 2019     1/8     13%     +£  0.00

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     5/21   24%     +£39.00

  • 2022     1/2     50%     +£  1.00

  • 2023     1/3     33%     +£  0.50

I’ve gone back to 2014 to emphasise the consistency for such a small stable.  Just 5 bumper runners in the above period but he’s not had a bumper winner since September 2008!.

GB FLAT TURF

CHARLIE APPLEBY (ALL)

Back from last year where he made a small loss but we halved the SP loss using early prices (£5.21).

  • 2018     8/19      42%     +£13.25

  • 2019     5/20      25%      (£  4.35)

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021    10/28     36%     +£  8.16

  • 2022    20/42     48%     +£26.95

  • 2023     5/22      23%      (£10.50)

Still a nice strike rate and I think the risk reward suggests we should give him another go this year.

CHARLIE HILLS (4yo+)

Lambourne stalwart who is a regular in the blog.

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     3/10     30%     +£ 5.70

  • 2022     5/13     38%     +£16.00

  • 2023     2/4       50%     +£16.00

There was a case for going with his 3yo’s as well but the older horses look a little more solid.

HUGHIE MORRISON (3YO+)

Berkshire trainer back from last year where he made a small profit.

  • 2019     3/13     23%     +£ 5.41

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     3/12     25%     +£ 4.06

  • 2022     2/9       22%     +£17.00

  • 2023     1/10     10%     +£ 3.00

Nothing flash but while he keeps making a profit we should stick with him, he won’t have many (if any 2yo runners)and if he does his record is poor with them in April.

TOM CLOVER (ALL)

Newmarket based blog virgin, trains a lot of the “Rogue” horses, with Rogue Lightening the highest rated.

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     12/10     20%     +£12.75

  • 2022       5/16     31%     +£10.38

  • 2023       1/5       20%      +£ 5.00

Pretty solid stuff, won’t keep us too busy in what will be a busy month.

HARRY EUSTACE (ALL)

Similar profile to Clover, based in Newmarket and a blog virgin.

  • 2021     2/6     33%     +£ 7.50

  • 2022     2/5     40%     +£ 4.00

  • 2023     3/10   30%     +£ 1.70

Again won’t have loads of runners but should keep us ticking over in terms of profit.

JAMES FERGUSON (ALL)

It’s just a conveyor belt of young Newmarket blog virgins this month.

  • 2021     1/7      14%     +£14.00

  • 2022     3/12    25%    +£  5.83

  • 2023     3/10    30%    +£  6.00

Again solid stuff that's hard to ignore.

GB AW

CHARLIE JOHNSTON (ALL)

I took a little bit of a risk with him last year as he had just taken over from his dad but it paid dividends although not huge ones.

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     12/46     26%     +£ 1.02

  • 2022      7/34      21%     +£ 4.94

  • 2023     11/47     23%     +£ 1.81

Our early price figures were a couple of points bigger at +£3.43.  His last two AW runners of March won at 3’s and 12’s which bodes well.

SIR MICHAEL STOUTE (4yo+)

Newmarket legend, surprised to find him in the blog so early in the season.

  • 2015     1/1     100%     +£ 0.30

  • 2016     3/3     100%     +£ 6.25

  • 2017     2/2     100%     +£ 1.83

  • 2018     0/1         0%      (£ 1.00)

  • 2019     2/4       50%     +£ 1.38

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     3/5       75%     +£ 5.63

  • 2022     2/7       29%     +£ 0.08

  • 2023     1/1      100%    +£ 2.75

I’m surprised I haven’t picked this up before but any older horses he runs on the AW in April have to be bet.

IRISH TURF

AIDEN O’BRIEN (Non 3yo’s)

No introduction needed for Ireland’s premier flat trainer.  Was in with his 2yo’s last year but I made a note to watch his older horses as well and we need to include them I think.

  • 2020     Covid

  • 2021     5/7     71%     +£ 5.17

  • 2022     6/8     75%     +£ 10.49

  • 2023     5/9     56%     +£ 1.81

Unbelievable strike rate and while we won’t be making our millions it will give us an interest over the water.

As always any questions or comments leave below, let's hope we can get back on track this month.

Horse Racing Trainers to Follow March 2024 [Inc Cheltenham]

March

A decent February has put us back in front for the year at the tune of +£9.76 LSP.

March is an exciting time for racing fans with the highlight of the jumps calendar in Cheltenham, gone are the days when we could just bet Mullins blind and bag a profit.  The champion trainer will have plenty of winners but loads of runners and little in the way of value.  I’ll highlight the trainers to target at Cheltenham at the end of the blog.

March was a winning month last year and as a result we have 4 renturning, whilst they might not have too  many Cheltenham runners I expect another solid month.

GB NH

HARRY FRY (ALL)

Dorset trainer who is no stranger to the blog, has the most Cheltenham entries of our trainers and has two or three with reasonable chances.

  • 2016     9/36     25%     +£ 5.54

  • 2017    11/35    31%     +£20.50

  • 2018     8/29     28%     +£ 5.43

  • 2019     6/34     18%      (£13.29)

  • 2020     2/19     11%      (£14.75)

  • 2021     4/29     14%     +£ 3.50

  • 2022     9/30     30%     +£ 2.98

  • 2023     4/22     18%      (£ 6.75)

Solid stuff back in the day and a bit of a renaissance in recent years, our own figures were +£1.50 LSP last year so we’ll stick with him.

CHRIS GORDON (ALL)

Hampshire trainer who is in again after providing a nice profit in the January blog, just 2 Cheltenham entries.

  • 2016     5/22     23%     +£34.13

  • 2017    12/22    55%     +£31.93

  • 2018      1/19      5%      (£17.00)

  • 2019      3/25     12%     (£  9.09)

  • 2020      4/16     25%    +£ 7.50

  • 2021      7/44     16%     (£10.60)

  • 2022      8/29     28%    +£16.75

  • 2023      4/21     19%    +£ 4.91

Just a couple of poor years in 2018 and 19, I’m not too worried about the 2021 figures, 7 winners means plenty of scope for Early Price gains that would have likely put us close to level.  We gleaned an extra +£2.84 last year from 4 winners.

NICKY RICHARDS (ALL)

Greystoke trainer, the star of the show last year.

  • 2017     7/26     27%     +£  3.28

  • 2018     6/23     26%     +£  5.25

  • 2019     6/25     24%     +£18.25

  • 2020     7/17     41%     +£17.93

  • 2021     3/48       6%      (£41.73)

  • 2022     8/34     24%     +£10.78

  • 2023    12/33    36%     +£41.43

Fantastic set of figures apart from the blip in 2021, I’m really looking forward to his runners this month.

SAM THOMAS (ALL)

Possible blog virgin, has just 4 Cheltenham entries but comes into the month with a winner and second from Graded races at the weekend.

  • 2020     0/5      0%       (£ 5.00)

  • 2021     6/14   43%     +£ 9.57

  • 2022     2/12   17%     +£ 1.70

  • 2023     6/20   30%     +£ 1.58

KERRY LEE (ALL)

Based in Hertfordshire, a trainer I like, just One Cheltenham entry but comes into the month with 4 winners from her last 5 runners.

  • 2020     0/9      0%     (£ 9.00)

  • 2021     2/14   14%   +£17.50

  • 2022     3/13   23%   +£ 4.00

  • 2023     4/11   36%   +£ 2.73

Similar figures to Thomas and don’t forget for both 2020 was a Covid riddled month so the blip can be forgiven.

GB AW

DAVID & NICOLA BARRON (ALL)

The only winning AW trainer from last March, figures going back to 2016 show how reliable they have become.

  • 2016     5/15     33%     +£ 5.35

  • 2017     5/36     14%      (£14.25)

  • 2018     4/16     25%     +£ 2.71

  • 2019     2/8       25%     +£12.57

  • 2020     1/2       50%     +£ 5.00

  • 2021     2/14     14%     +£ 2.50

  • 2022     3/10     30%     +£ 7.50

  • 2023     2/11     18%     +£ 8.00

Another solid year in 2023, hopefully more of the same this time around.

ROGER VARIAN (ALL)

One of my favourite flat trainers, comes into the month with his last 6 runners all in the first 3.

  • 2020     1/2      50%     +£ 1.50

  • 2021     4/10    40%      (£ 0.53)

  • 2022     5/20    25%     +£ 5.20

  • 2023     3/10    30%     +£ 2.75

Solid stuff, won’t keep us too busy but should prove a solid addition.

GEORGE BOUGHEY (ALL)

Based in Newmarket, has shot onto the scene in recent years and boasts some nice March figures.

  • 2020     1/3        33%     +£ 4.00

  • 2021     11/30    37%     +£ 8.96

  • 2022     3/25      12%      (£ 2.25)

  • 2023     7/29      24%     +£12.94

Again, solid stuff, minimal losses in his one bad year.

CHELTENHAM TRAINER THOUGHTS

It’s hard to see past the usual suspects, Mullins, Elliott and De Bromhead could have half the winners between them.  Of the GB trainers Henderson looks the most likely with Skelton the man to be with in the Handicaps, especially the Coral Cup, County Hurdle and Martin Pipe.  GB trainers have also bagged the winner of the Ultima in the last 10 years!

As usual, any questions, comments, observations please leave below.  I’m off again for 10 days around Cheltenham so updates may be a bit thin on the ground, Good Luck!

Horse Racing Trainers to Follow in February 2024

February

A small loss in January means we take (£2.51 LSP) into this month.

February is traditionally a quiet month but we have 8 trainers to go to war with, 5 NH (1 Irish), 3 AW, 5 return after showing a profit last February.

GB National Hunt

EMMA LAVELLE (NON CHASE)

Star of the show in the last 2 years, she gave a £23.41 LSP in 2022 and £23.25 LSP last year.

  • 2017     5/13     38%     +£ 8.00

  • 2018     3/15     20%      (£1.00)

  • 2019     3/11     27%      +£ 8.00

  • 2020     2/22      9%       +£ 0.50

  • 2021     3/12     25%      +£61.38

  • 2022     5/18     28%      +£17.41

  • 2023     4/19     21%      +£ 8.75

She’s just 3/33 for the 7 year period with her chase runners so we’ll give them a swerve.  Interesting that our own early price figures trebled the SP profit.

LJ MORGAN (NON HURDLES)

Back for a third year, she was +£18.00 LSP in 2022 and +£5.00 in 2023 using early prices.

  • 2018     4/7     57%     +£25.75

  • 2019     0/1       0%      (£  1.00)

  • 2020     1/4     25%      (£  0.50)

  • 2021     5/8     63%     +£10.80

  • 2022     7/18   39%     +£  6.73

  • 2023     3/11   27%     +£  0.25

Loads of early price gains in the past two years, another where it will pay to get on early.

HENRY DALY (ALL)

Shropshire trainer who turns up now and again, new to the February blog though.

  • 2020     3/12     25%     (£ 3.31)

  • 2021     0/12      0%      (£12.00)

  • 2022     5/18     28%    +£19.00

  • 2023     5/22     23%    +£  8.25

Solid stuff in the last two seasons and a repeat of 2020 wouldn’t be a disaster, could prove a useful addition to the portfolio.

ALISTAIR RALPH (NON NH FLAT)

Another Shropshire trainer, pretty sure this guy is a blog virgin.

  • 2020      2/9       22%     +£ 0.00

  • 2021      2/14     14%     +£20.00

  • 2022      2/14     14%     +£ 5.00

  • 2023      6/22     27%     +£14.05

Decent set of figures in terms of LSP, I would like the strike rate to emulate last year ideally.  Stay away from his bumper runners 0/13 over the above period.

IRISH NH

WILLIE MULLINS (HURDLERS)

No surprise to see this guy in the blog, will be setting his string up for a tilt at the festival next month and he’s had his hurdlers firing in February in recent years.

  • 2020     8/59     14%     (£29.16)

  • 2021     9/54     17%    +£ 4.53

  • 2022    14/39    36%    +£ 0.74

  • 2023    12/39    31%    +£ 9.83

Nice figures, especially the last two years and we should be able to sneak some extra profit using early prices with the amount of winners.

GB AW

CHARLIE APPLEBY (ALL)

Usually starts the year well, we’ve had him in January and February for the last three years.

  • 2018     2/8      25%     (£  3.18)

  • 2019     7/10    70%    +£  3.11

  • 2020     4/17    24%     (£  7.25)

  • 2021     4/8      50%    +£  3.22

  • 2022     5/19    26%     (£  1.47)

  • 2023     4/10    40%    +£  5.88

We managed +£7.08 with EP last year, while he keeps showing a profit we’ll keep throwing him in.

RICHARD FAHEY (4YO+)

A trainer who we will see a lot of on the turf in the summer, he has some nice figures this month with his older horses.

  • 2019     3/11      27%     +£  3.50

  • 2020     3/12      25%     +£  5.50

  • 2021     7/45      16%      (£  4.17)

  • 2022     4/15      27%     +£29.50

  • 2023     4/12      33%     +£13.33

Good set of figures, there’s a case for having all his runners on the last two years figures but we’ll just take a watching brief in that respect this year with a view to having them all next February.

KEVIN PHILIPPART DE FOY (ALL)

Newmarket trainer, a blog virgin last year.

  • 2021     3/7       43%     +£  2.50

  • 2022     6/14     43%     +£10.75

  • 2023     6/24     25%     +£14.58

We took a bit of a risk on him last year with just two years figures but we were rewarded with a +£18.25 LSP using EP, a must for inclusion this year.

As always, any questions, comments or observations please leave below, let's see if we can add to the kitty before Cheltenham!

Figure updates might be a bit sparse in the middle of the month as I’m away for a week,  Good Luck !

Horse Racing Trainers to Follow in January 2024

January

We showed a nice profit last January +£25.90 LSP with 6 of our 10 trainers showing a profit.

We have 8 trainers this month, 7 are back from last year, we have 5 NH trainers and 3 AW trainers.

National Hunt Trainers

NICKY RICHARDS (NON HURDLERS)

Back in profit last year after a small loss in 2022, we need to see an improvement this time around.

  • 2016     2/10     20%     +£ 1.00

  • 2017     3/17     18%     +£10.88

  • 2018     2/11     18%     +£ 1.00

  • 2019     5/14     33%     +£ 1.53

  • 2020     3/13     23%     +£ 5.75

  • 2021     2/7       29%     +£45.00

  • 2022     0/4        0%       (£ 4.00)

  • 2023     1/9       11%      +£ 3.00

I’d like to see some stronger figures this year but will keep him in while he’s showing a profit.

He was 0/13 with his hurdlers last year and he was 2/23 and (£6.60) in 2022 it’s a similar story in previous years so we stick with his Chase and Bumper runners..

SUE SMITH (ALL)

Another top performer from last season, she showed +£31.50 LSP using a combination of exchange and early prices, a regular to the January blog.

  • 2014     10/40     25%     +£27.28

  • 2015     8/32       25%     +£31.25

  • 2016     4/22       18%     +£  7.00

  • 2017     7/26       27%     +£11.00

  • 2018     9/39       23%     +£  0.70

  • 2019     8/19       42%     +£41.25

  • 2020     8/27       30%     +£12.04

  • 2021     1/6         17%      (£  4.43)

  • 2022     5/23       22%     +£15.00

  • 2023     3/23       13%     +£22.50

It really doesn’t get much better than that over a 10 year period, if I remember correctly she had some illness in the stable in 2021 which stopped her running horses, hence the blip.

GARY MOORE (ALL)

Sussex trainer who currently sits 7th on the trainers list after a good start to the season.

  • 2018     9/46     20%     +£  7.00

  • 2019     9/61     15%      (£20.38)

  • 2020     8/48     17%     +£  5.70

  • 2021    11/56    20%     +£35.78

  • 2022    16/68    24%     +£  9.13

  • 2023    10/49    20%      (£  9.92)

Looks disappointing on the face of it but our own figures were +£4.33 and the strike rate is fine, we’ll give him another go.

CHRIS GORDON (NON BUMPERS)

Hampshire trainer who is back after giving us a +£26.72 LSP last January.

  • 2018     6/21     29%     +£34.10

  • 2019     3/21     14%      (£11.17)

  • 2020     5/28     18%     +£16.23

  • 2021     2/7       29%     +£  0.57

  • 2022     8/39     21%     +£  1.71

  • 2023     3/12     25%     +£23.75

Solid stuff, avoid his Bumper horses, he’s 1/8 and (£5.25) for the above period.

OLLY MURPHY (ALL)

The only trainer who wasn’t here last January.

  • 2018     10/31     32%     +£19.75

  • 2019      8/43      19%      (£10.56)

  • 2020     15/39     38%     +£29.68

  • 2021     10/52     19%     +£  2.71

  • 2022       6/64       9%      (£43.02)

  • 2023       9/48     19%     +£31.16

As long as we dodge a repeat of the 2022 figures we should make a nice profit from this guy who comes into the month with a 25% strike rate in December.

ALL WEATHER TRAINERS

CHARLIE JOHNSTON (4YO+)

The Johnston’s are Blog regulars who usually start the season well with their older horses.

  • 2017     4/17     24%     +£  0.41

  • 2018     3/9       33%     +£  5.25

  • 2019     4/11     36%     +£22.48

  • 2020     5/25     20%      (£  2.88)

  • 2021     14/24   58%     +£47.68

  • 2022      5/23    22%      (£  7.05)

  • 2023      3/15    20%      (£  4.00)

LSL in the last 2 years but a really consistent strike rate, our own figures were (£2.75) last year and 5 of his 12 non winning runners finished second.

CHARLIE APPLEBY (ALL)

Won’t be the first time he finds himself in the blog, back from last year.

  • 2015      16/45     36%     +£  2.94

  • 2016       1/4        25%      (£  1.00)

  • 2017       3/4        75%     +£  3.60

  • 2018       7/18      39%     +£  1.14

  • 2019       2/9        22%      (£  1.75)

  • 2020       5/12      42%      (£  0.45)

  • 2021       6/11      55%     +£  0.25

  • 2022       7/15      47%     +£  0.00

  • 2023       7/15      47%     +£  0.56

Unbelievable strike rate, the LSP is poor but we were +£1.55 last year, while he’s giving us a profit we’ll keep him in.

ARCHIE WATSON (ALL)

We were rewarded for sticking with him last year despite his figures looking a little weak.  +£26.26 was one of the best returns of our trainers.

  • 2017     3/11     27%     +£ 5.50

  • 2018     8/25     32%     +£34.13

  • 2019     4/49     14%     (£27.17)

  • 2020     8/46     17%     +£ 5.38

  • 2021    10/50    20%     (£13.19)

  • 2022     5/34     15%     (£18.17)

  • 2023    10/58    17%     +£ 4.79

We actually made a tiny profit in 2022 from early prices and a disqualified winner that doesn’t appear in the results above but we were paid on.  Last year our profit was some 20 points bigger than the SP figures so get on early!

As always, any comments, questions or observations please leave in the comments below, here’s to another winning year, good luck!

Horse Racing Trainers to Follow in December 2023

December

The year has flown past and we go into December at around +£30 LSP which gives up every chance of another winning year.

We made a small profit last December and as a result we have 4 returning.

It's been hard trying to find new blood for the month with very few good stats on show so just 1 newbie meaning just 5 in total, this is less than ideal but I’ve trawled through around 300 trainers and it’s the best I can come up with.

GB NH

VENETIA WILLIAMS (ALL)

We’ve been on her horses the last three December’s and the first two years she made a tiny loss but last year she made a healthy profit

  • 2018     9/53     17%     +£16.83

  • 2019    16/56    29%     +£ 4.42

  • 2020     7/55     13%      (£15.54)

  • 2021    14/59    24%      (£  7.72)

  • 2022      9/54    17%     +£ 5.25

Our own figures using early prices were (£4.75) in 2020 and only (£1.38) in 2021, last year we were +£15.50 with early prices so get on early.  She couldn’t be in better form 34% and +£30.44 in November, I just hope she hasn’t peaked too early.

SANDY THOMSON (ALL)

Another regular in the Yule tide blog, the star of the show last December with a +£20.68 LSP.

  • 2017     3/12     25%   +£11.75

  • 2018     5/20     25%   +£14.62

  • 2019     5/25     22%   +£11.50

  • 2020     4/20     20%    +£ 3.88

  • 2021     3/32      9%     (£16.25)

  • 2022     7/23     30%    +£12.28

Our own SP figures were just (£1.50) in 2021 using early prices and we almost doubled the LSP last year, you really need to get on early with this guy in, we also doubled the SP profit in 2019 and had SIX TIMES the profit in 2020 using early prices, one was bet at 25’s and won at 17/2!

EVAN WILLIAMS (NON BUMPERS)

Glamorgan trainer back from last year, usually finds a couple of nice priced winners in December.

  • 2018    11/67    16%    +£46.60

  • 2019     5/49     10%     (£ 2.50)

  • 2020    10/39    26%    +£17.46

  • 2021     6/48     13%    +£ 2.83

  • 2022     5/37     14%    +£ 1.50

Our own early price figures were +£13.30 LSP last December.  Don’t be surprised to see him find a winner at the Welsh National meeting at Chepstow at the back end of the year.  Remember to ignore his bumper runners , he’s 0/11 in the above period.

HENRY DALY (ALL)

Shropshire trainer and the only one I’ve managed to uncover this month.

  • 2019     2/17     12%     +£ 7.00

  • 2020     0/14       0%      (£14.00)

  • 2021     6/26      23%    +£ 5.98

  • 2022     6/23      26%    +£10.06

We always put more emphasis on the recent figures and the fact that they are betting better year on year augurs well for the month ahead.

NH  IRELAND

HENRY DE BROMHEAD (HURDLERS)

Waterford trainer back from last year where he gave us a +£8.44 LSP.

  • 2017     9/37      24%     +£68.33

  • 2018    11/49     22%      +£46.84

  • 2019    10/49     20%     +£37.09

  • 2020     7/58      12%      (£22.88)

  • 2021     5/57       9%       (£13.38)

  • 2022     6/39      15%      (£  0.38)

We stuck with him in 2021 and it paid dividends despite what the SP figures said, he gave a +£6.29 LSP.  His 5 winners were bet at 20’s 18’s 16’s 3’s and 13/8, so again get on early.  Last year it was a similar story with almost +£9.00 LSP extra.

It’s not going to be a busy betting month so far as the blog is concerned but hopefully a profitable one.

Horse Racing Trainers to Follow in November 2023

November

A small profit in October meaning we are around level for the year going into the final 2 months.  November was a losing month for us last year so just 2 will return.  We have 7 trainers in total, 3 NH and 4 AW.

GB NH

PAUL NICHOLLS (NON CHASE)

Champion trainer who generally gets his string firing early.

  • 2019     10/63     16%     (£31.01)

  • 2020     25/76     33%    +£44.36

  • 2021     15/59     27%     (£16.99)

  • 2022     22/57     39%    +£16.34

Two really good years from the last Three and it wouldn’t be ridiculous to expect a single figure loss in 2021 using early prices from 15 winners.  Having watched a recent interview he said that his horses were further forward than in recent years.

Remember we are ignoring his chasers who are 39/160 and (£27.06) over the 4 November’s.

KIM BAILEY (CHASE)

Back from last month where he gave us a profit with all his runners.

  • 2019     5/18     28%     (£ 3.38)

  • 2020     5/21     24%    +£ 2.10

  • 2021     3/11     27%    +£ 6.00

  • 2022     2/17     12%    +£ 9.00

Steady stuff and he’s 1/1 with his chase runners in October.

IRISH NH

WILLIE MULLINS (ALL)

Needs no introduction, this is the month he starts the big guns on their first steps to possible Cheltenham glory.

  • 2014     34/80     43%    (£ 4.23)

  • 2015     26/59     44%    +£ 2.94

  • 2016     20/46     43%    +£ 7.74

  • 2017     18/47     38%    (£ 7.89)

  • 2018     13/54     24%    (£ 4.71)

  • 2019     31/101   31%    (£ 5.15)

  • 2020     26/67     39%    (£ 4.81)

  • 2021      9/47      19%    (£ 3.96)

  • 2022     16/58     28%    (£ 1.51)

I know what you're thinking “why are we following a trainer with 7 losing months out of the last 9”?  Well most of the losing months are less than £5 LSL and with double figure winners we would definitely turn those losing months into winning ones using Early prices.   An example of this was July 2022 we made a +£4.18 profit from Mullins, that month he had 17 winners and his SP loss was (£13.52), so £17.60 extra profit from 17 winners.   June 2023 he made an appearance again, our figures showed a +£11.50 LSP from 17 winners, the SP win was just +£3.41 so £8 extra.  His figures are so consistent I’m certain that if he makes a single figure loss we will make a healthy profit.

GB AW

WILLIE HAGGAS (3YO’S)

Back from last year where he made a small profit from just 3 runners.

  • 2016     2/3       67%     +£  3.67

  • 2017     2/7       29%     +£  0.44

  • 2018     3/9       33%     +£  2.00

  • 2019     3/10     30%     +£  2.83

  • 2020     4/9       44%     +£  4.54

  • 2021     2/6       33%      (£  2.55)

  • 2022     2/3       67%     +£ 4.50

Really solid stuff, no reason why we shouldn't be included again.

SIMON & ED CRISFORD (ALL)

Another back from last year where they gave a nice profit.

  • 2018     7/25       28%     +£ 8.08

  • 2019     2/11       18%     +£18.50

  • 2020     5/18       28%     +£ 6.50

  • 2021     6/20       30%     +£ 1.10

  • 2022     4/13       31%     +£10.93

The third year of his inclusion, much better profit last year, hopefully more of the same.

DAVID SIMCOCK (ALL)

Usually sneaks into an AW blog at some time over the winter.

  • 2019     4/17     24%     +£18.50

  • 2020     2/24      8%       (£13.75)

  • 2021     4/13     31%     +£ 6.50

  • 2022     4/24     17%     +£24.50

Solid stuff and comes into the month with a 32% strike rate and +£10 LSP in October.

CHARLIE APPLEBY (2YO’S)

Champion trainer who introduces some nice types over the winter.

  • 2016     3/6     50%     +£ 3.85

  • 2017     5/10   50%     +£ 7.27

  • 2018     3/9     33%     +£ 6.00

  • 2019     3/8     38%      (£ 2.33)

  • 2020     6/15   40%      (£ 2.90)

  • 2021     6/20   30%      (£ 4.91)

  • 2022     8/18   44%     +£ 3.19

November is by far his best month for 2yo winners, a brilliant strike rate and we could even pinch a bit using early prices.

Horse Racing Trainers to Follow in October 2023

October

We go into the last quarter of the year around level at the time of writing which is a little disappointing from where we were but we did have a good last quarter in 2022 so hopefully we can do the same this year and end the year in profit.

+£73.41 last October so 5 return, we also have some exciting additions.

GB FLAT TURF

CHARLIE APPLEBY (ALL)

Back from last year where we made a profit following his 2yo’s, all his horses this time around.

  • 2017     9/24     38%     +£14.59

  • 2018     4/15     27%      (£ 2.40)

  • 2019     2/10     20%      (£ 2.67)

  • 2020     8/22     36%     +£ 9.36

  • 2021    11/39    28%     +£ 0.31

  • 2022    13/45    29%    +£13.44

Cracking strike rate but reasonable LSP to go with it, comes into the month on the back of a really good September.

RALPH BECKETT (ALL)

Back from last month where so far his 2yo figures have been a little disappointing, has some solid figures in October.

  • 2019     10/41     24%     +£44.75

  • 2020     11/64     17%     +£17.88

  • 2021      7/59      12%      (£28.93)

  • 2022     10/67     15%     +£14.88

Ideally would like a slightly better strike rate but has started to run into a bit of form at the end of September so hopefully can carry that on into October.

GB NH

DONALD McCAIN (ALL)

Back from last year where he made a tiny loss, I made a note to include this year, he had 8 seconds and 15 thirds so 35/49 runners finished in the first 3.

  • 2019     2/35     7%     +£21.00

  • 2020     9/50    18%    +£  4.50

  • 2021    23/65   35%    +£21.13

  • 2022     9/49    18%     (£  8.33)

Our own figures showed just a (1.82) LSL using early prices, I think he’s well worth the risk.

KIM BAILEY (ALL)

Back from last year where he provided a +£18.83 LSP, 5 of his 6 winners were 7/2 or above.

  • 2018     9/22     41%     +£ 9.16

  • 2019     5/18     28%     +£14.43

  • 2020    13/45    29%     +£ 9.14

  • 2021     3/30     10%      (£20.95)

  • 2022     6/22     27%     +£ 8.29

We forgave him a poor 2021 and our loyalty was rewarded with a really good month, let's hope for more of the same.

JONJO O’NEIL (ALL)

The star of the show last month with a +£73.05 LSP, which was largely due to a 94/1 winner on the exchange.

  • 2019     8/58     14%     +£ 5.38

  • 2020    11/75    15%     +£23.88

  • 2021    12/64    19%     +£22.18

  • 2022     9/54     17%     +£53.36

Ideally we would like a better strike rate but you can’t argue with the LSP, 2 winners from his last 3 runners at the time of writing.

HARRY FRY (ALL)

Another back from last year where he produced a +£2.00 LSP

  • 2016     6/26     23%     +£ 1.68

  • 2017     7/30     23%      (£ 1.00)

  • 2018     2/13     15%     +£ 1.50

  • 2019     4/22     18%     +£ 8.50

  • 2020     5/29     17%      (£ 9.75)

  • 2021     6/27     22%     +£ 2.33

  • 2022     5/15     33%      (£ 3.04)

Despite the SP figure we made a profit last year with him and with such a nice strike rate would be folly to omit.

GB AW

JOHN & THADY GOSDEN (ALL)

Not as prominent in the blog in recent years but has some stand out AW figures in October.  The figures below are John on his own up to and including 2020, after that it’s Thady in partnership with his dad.

  • 2016     5/17     29%     +£ 6.97

  • 2017     7/24     29%     +£ 4.94

  • 2018     7/26     30%     +£ 3.30

  • 2019    13/42    31%     +£ 2.67

  • 2020    10/40    25%     +£ 9.41

  • 2021      5/23    22%      (£11.97)

  • 2022     13/26   50%     +£28.32

2021 was the first year of Thady’s inclusion, whether they tried something different or just an anomaly I’m not sure but back with a bang last year.  Really strong figures.

IRISH NH

NOEL MEADE (ALL)

Last up a bit of interest over the water, back from last year with a +£2.19 LSP.

  • 2016     11/34      32%     +£ 7.25

  • 2017      9/42       21%     +£ 5.55

  • 2018      6/29       21%      (£ 2.00)

  • 2019     10/45      22%     +£13.47

  • 2020     15/63      24%      (£12.80)

  • 2021      3/24       13%      (£ 3.00)

  • 2022      7/21       33%      (£ 6.07)

This might look like a strange inclusion on the face of it but my reasoning is, we made an EP profit from him last year and I rarely omit trainers after a winning month.  The fact we outscored the SP figure by +£8.26 from just 7 winners last year suggests that if something similar had happened in 2020 from 15 winners we would have likely made a profit that year despite the £12.80 loss.  What this does tell us is we have to get on this guy early as his horses are usually well bet.

As always any questions or comments please leave below, good luck!!!!!

Horse Racing Trainers to Follow in September 2023

September

A small loss in August means we enter the last quarter of the year at +£43 LSP.

This month sees the last classic of the year and the 2yo’s start to find their pecking order for next season.

We have 9 trainers to go to war with, after a small loss last September we have a couple returning.

GB FLAT TURF

ANDREW BALDING (ALL)

4th in the trainers championship last year.

  • 2019     15/83      18%     +£19.91

  • 2020     16/107    15%     +£111.38

  • 2021     12/95      13%      (£50.02)

  • 2022     19/91      21%     +£12.25

Ideally I would like a slightly bigger strike rate but that did improve last year, double figure winners gives plenty of opportunity to build on the SP profit using early BOG prices.

RALPH BECKETT (2YO’S)

A blog favourite, hasn’t been in the blog as much as normal but has some lovely figures with his 2yo’s in September.

  • 2018     7/25     28%     +£17.88

  • 2019     7/25     28%     +£ 1.94

  • 2020     6/29     21%      (£ 4.18)

  • 2021     4/27     15%     +£ 2.63

  • 2022    10/38    28%     +£24.83

Comes into the month with nice 2yo figures, hoping he can keep that going.

SIMON AND ED CRISFORD (ALL)

Newmarket based duo who have carried on where Simon left off in terms of September performance.

  • 2015     4/10     40%     +£ 4.23

  • 2016     4/21     19%     +£ 4.50

  • 2017     4/24     17%     +£ 5.00

  • 2018     5/29     17%      (£14.15)

  • 2019     5/20     25%     +£20.00

  • 2020    10/28    36%     +£18.84

  • 2021      5/33    15%      (£17.58)

  • 2022      7/25    28%     +£14.58

Solid figures in 6 of the last 8 years, looks worthy of inclusion especially with 3 of the last 4 years being really strong.

CLIVE COX (2&3YO’S)

Back from last year where he was the star of the show with +£29.24 LSP add that to +£46.50 in 2019, +£23.62 in 2020 and +£33.63 in 2021, these are some of the best stats we’ll find.

  • 2017     11/34     32%     +£36.00

  • 2018      8/31      26%     +£23.04

  • 2019      6/39      15%     +£23.33

  • 2020      7/40      18%     +£14.78

  • 2021      9/45      20%     +£23.43

  • 2022     11/41     27%     +£17.23

As we can see from the figures plenty of early price gains to add to the already fantastic results.  4/61 and a £36 LSL with his older horses over the same period.

GB NH

NICKY HENDERSON (ALL)

The only profitable NH trainer for us last year, his early season figures are surprisingly good.

  • 2018     4/11     36%     +£11.37

  • 2019     0/4        0%       (£ 4.00)

  • 2020     7/20     35%      (£ 2.71)

  • 2021     8/16     50%     +£39.00

  • 2022     4/10     40%     +£ 9.60

Our own EP profits were +£12.00, coming into the month with form figures of 15122 and the winners were 8’s and 12’s.

MILTON HARRIS (ALL)

Wiltshire trainer who has had a colourful career, came back into trainer after a 7 year hiatus with plenty of success.

  • 2019     1/8      13%      (£ 1.50)

  • 2020     2/16    13%     +£27.00

  • 2021     6/18    33%     +£21.33

  • 2022    11/23   48%     +£16.27

Cracking figures in recent years, no reason why that should change this time around.

GB AW

SIMON & ED CRISFORD (ALL)

Always nice when a trainer crosses over 2 categories within the blog, the Crisfords had some nice turf figures but these look even stronger.

  • 2019     4/13     31%     +£ 2.00

  • 2020     5/17     53%     +£23.49

  • 2021      3/8      38%     +£ 2.48

  • 2022      5/16    31%     +£ 0.80

Really good stats and plenty of winners so potential EP gains.

RALPH BECKETT (2&3YO’S)

Back from last year and another crossing over from the turf although a slightly different criteria.

  • 2014     4/20     20%     +£26.88

  • 2015     2/9       22%     +£ 4.88

  • 2016     1/11       9%      (£ 7.00)

  • 2017     1/9       11%     +£17.00

  • 2018     5/23     21%     +£ 5.25

  • 2019     3/18     17%      (£ 5.00)

  • 2020     4/18     22%     +£ 1.48

  • 2021     3/12     25%     +£11.41

  • 2022     4/15     27%     +£ 3.80

Our own figures were +£5.63 last year, he doesn’t have many 4yo+ runners but he’s still 1/15 and (£12.37) over the above period.

IRISH NH

BARRY CONNELL (ALL)

I always like some interest in Ireland and this will give us a tiny interest (none of the usual protagonists have good enough figures).

This guy is top notch as he showed last season with Marine Nationale and Good Land.

  • 2020     2/7     29%     +£ 4.00

  • 2021     2/4     50%     +£ 1.63

  • 2022     2/2    100%    +£10.50

Connell owns all his own horses so there won’t be many runners but it’s nice to have a little interest in Ireland.

As always, comments, questions and observations are all welcome.  Good Luck!

Horse Racing Trainers to Follow in August 2023

August

After a good July, at the time of writing we sit at +£50 LSP for the year, August wasn’t too kind last year and as a result we have just two trainers returning.  It won’t be a quiet month however, 14 trainers in total which is a lot but a few smaller stables that won’t have loads of runners so I’m expecting a similar amount of runners as usual.

GB FLAT TURF

W MUIR AND C GRASSICK (ALL)

The only flat trainer back from last month, an August regular who provided +£8 LSP last year.

  • 2019     5/26     19%     +£11.75

  • 2020     4/18     22%     +£20.50

  • 2021     7/29     24%     +£16.00

  • 2022     5/29     17%     +£ 3.83

Decent stuff, we’ll keep them on side while they keep providing a profit.

KARL BURKE (ALL)

North Yorkshire trainer who comes into the month on the back of a really good July.

  • 2018     7/53     13%     +£22.25

  • 2019     5/68      7%       (£35.50)

  • 2020     8/56     14%     +£10.70

  • 2021    16/84    19%      (£ 3.68)

  • 2022    16/86    19%     +£77.06

Ideally we would like a better strike rate but that has improved in recent years which is what we put most emphasis on.  Just one really bad year, with 16 winners in 2021 I would expect to turn that SP loss into around 10 point profit taking advantage of early prices.

GEORGE BOUGHEY (ALL)

One of the most promising young trainers around, already a classic winner, nice August figures.

  • 2019     1/5      20%      (£ 0.67)

  • 2020     3/11    27%     +£ 7.50

  • 2021     4/28    14%     +£ 7.41

  • 2022     7/43    16%     +£ 1.05

Decent figures and coming into the month having had a profitable June and July, landed the big handicap at Ascot on Saturday.

OWEN BURROWS (ALL)

Another of the new breed of trainers and another who is coming into the month flying with the winner on the King George on Saturday.

  • 2019     5/11     45%     +£ 3.92

  • 2020     5/18     28%     +£ 3.50

  • 2021     3/15     20%      (£ 8.02)

  • 2022     3/10     30%     +£ 2.08

Cracking strike rate and while the profit isn’t massive he should still prove a useful addition.

DANIEL AND CLAIRE KUBLER (3YO+)

Lambourne trainers who enter the blog for the first time.  Just three years worth of figures but plenty to shout about.

  • 2020     3/10     30%     +£23.50

  • 2021     3/11     27%     +£ 9.25

  • 2022     5/15     33%     +£26.21

Only three years but hard to argue with these figures, only 4 2yo runners over the period and they all lost.

ROGER TEAL (4YO+)

Another Lambourn based blog virgin, just his older horses.

  • 2016      2/5     40%     +£ 8.00

  • 2017      1/6     17%     +£23.00

  • 2018      1/9     11%      (£ 4.00)

  • 2019     4/15    27%     +£19.13

  • 2020      1/7     14%      (£ 4.63)

  • 2021      1/7     14%     +£10.00

  • 2022      3/12   25%     +£47.25

Won’t have many runners so little risk involved and a big upside if he has a season like last year.

S WOOD (ALL)

Yet another newbie for the blog, Newmarket based and some nice August figures.

  • 2021     3/9     33%     +£ 9.50

  • 2022     5/17   29%     +£22.00

Back training in GB after a long time away, these were his figures from his first spell.

  • 1998     4/25     16%     +£13.88

  • 1999     8/36     22%     +£14.38

  • 2000     7/44     16%     +£19.55

  • 2001     4/33     12%     +£ 2.62

Should prove another useful addition.

HEATHER MAIN (ALL)

Oxon trainer I really like, could be top class with the right ammunition, solid August figures.

  • 2019     2/16     13%     +£27.00

  • 2020     2/20     10%     +£23.50

  • 2021     2/9       22%     +£123.00

  • 2022     3/19     16%     +£ 8.50

Hard to argue with the LSP despite an underwhelming strike rate.

GB NH

NEIL MULHOLLAND (ALL)

The star of the show last year with a +£39 LSP.

  • 2019     2/15     8%     +£13.00

  • 2020     7/42    17%    +£18.33

  • 2021     4/15    27%    +£17.38

  • 2022     6/25    24%    +£23.00

Really good stats and getting better year on year which is what I like.

DONALD McCAIN (ALL)

Cheshire trainer who crops up in the blog a lot.

  • 2016     6/27     22%     +£21.88

  • 2017    13/29    45%     +£55.14

  • 2018      8/40    20%      (£ 6.93)

  • 2019      7/37    19%      (£ 7.88)

  • 2020      4/33    12%      (£19.57)

  • 2021      9/34    26%     +£19.95

  • 2022     13/30   43%     +£17.94

Plenty of evidence to call on and only 2020 that was really bad, back on track in each of the last two years.

BEN PAULING (ALL)

I think the last time this guy appeared was when Barters Hill was his star.

  • 2019     0/2       0%     (£ 2.00)

  • 2020     3/12   25%     (£ 0.50)

  • 2021     3/9     33%    +£24.00

  • 2022     5/13   38%    +£ 6.46

Increased strike rate year on year and comes into the month with a 20%+ strike rate in May, June and July.

GB AW

ROGER VARIAN (ALL)

Regular in the turf blog, some solid AW figures.

  • 2019     7/21     33%     +£10.65

  • 2020     5/17     29%     +£  2.50

  • 2021     6/18     33%      (£ 1.55)

  • 2022     5/22     23%      (£ 3.29)

Cracking strike rate and every chance we’d have eked a profit in the last two years using early prices.

IRISH FLAT TURF

P TWOMEY (ALL)

Back from last month where he did really well for us.

  • 2018     1/2      50%      +£ 0.50

  • 2019     4/7      57%      +£ 6.98

  • 2020     2/13    15%       (£ 5.17)

  • 2021     3/8      38%      +£ 3.00

  • 2022     5/15    33%      +£ 1.75

Comes into the month with 3 winners from the last 4 runners.

WILLIE MULLINS (GALWAY)

No definitive stats for this but made a note to bet them all last year as he was in the blog and had a look at the last two years and would have made a profit from betting all his runners at SP both years.

As always, any questions, comments, observations, leave below, Good Luck!

Horse Racing Trainers to Follow in July 2023

July

We go into the second half of the year with a tiny profit after a losing June but plenty of reason for optimism.  We have 11 trainers this month, 7 back from last July where we made a +£90 LSP, we have 7 turf, 2 NH and one from each discipline in Ireland.

GB FLAT TURF

WILLIE HAGGAS (3YO’S)

We’ll start with a trainer that wasn’t there last year.

  • 2018     16/40     40%     +£15.55

  • 2019     10/42     24%      (£ 7.47)

  • 2020     22/72     31%     +£11.58

  • 2021     15/50     30%     +£ 3.94

  • 2022     16/44     36%     +£ 4.27

A really solid set of figures to start with, a fantastic strike rate and double figure winners gives plenty of room for early price gains.

ANDREW BALDING (2Y0’S)

Kingsclere trainer who should have been in the blog before looking at these figures.

  • 2014     2/6       33%     +£ 5.50

  • 2015     2/18     11%     +£13.00

  • 2016     6/28     21%     +£ 1.90

  • 2017     4/13     31%     +£ 8.75

  • 2018     3/15     20%      (£ 0.58)

  • 2019     4/15     27%     +£11.00

  • 2020     5/24     21%      (£ 8.08)

  • 2021     9/39     23%     +£21.20

  • 2022     6/31     19%     +£ 0.12

Again really good figures and 9 years of them, just his 2yo’s his other horses don’t perform nearly as well.

HARRY & ROGER CHARLTON (ALL)

Back from last year with his older horses and last month where we followed his younger horses, no criteria this month we are on them all.

  • 2018     7/31     21%     +£13.50

  • 2019     3/29     10%     +£ 0.50

  • 2020     9/43     19%     +£ 0.35

  • 2021    12/47    26%     +£ 5.24

  • 2022     8/29     28%     +£ 0.27

Small profit some years but those can be increased using early prices, gave +£2.41 last year.

SIR MARK PRESCOTT (3YO+)

Arc hero and one of the shrewdest trainers around.

  • 2018     17/32     53%     +£17.36

  • 2019      9/26      35%     +£16.67

  • 2020      8/19      42%     +£ 1.14

  • 2021      3/18      17%      (£10.58)

  • 2022      8/23      35%     +£12.90

Stunning strike rate apart from 2021 and just 2/22 with his 2yo’s over that period.

CHARLIE FELLOWS (ALL)

Another back from last month where he gave a tiny loss.  Let's hope he’s saved his winners for July.

  • 2019     3/13     23%     +£ 5.45

  • 2020     6/27     22%     +£ 9.25

  • 2021     4/35     11%     +£ 9.25

  • 2022     5/16     31%     +£18.64

Really solid stuff, a repeat of any of these will suffice.

PAUL MIDGLEY (ALL)

North Yorkshire trainer who was the star of the show last year with a +£44 LSP

  • 2017     8/61     13%     +£ 2.50

  • 2018     5/15     10%      (£24.88)

  • 2019     7/46     15%     +£ 2.75

  • 2020     9/54     17%     +£11.92

  • 2021     6/51     12%     +£20.50

  • 2022     6/53     11%     +£21.33

Like I said last year his poor strike rate almost makes him more attractive because it tells us he’s banging in at least one big winner every July and there’s a chance we can hit big with it on the exchange.  Last year we did it with Birkenhead which won at 25’s but we had at 50 on the exchange.

GEORGE SCOTT (ALL)

Another big winner for us last year +£25.08 LSP as we bagged one of his 12/1 winners at 30’s on the exchanges.

  • 2016     4/18     22%     +£21.13

  • 2017     3/12     25%      (£ 5.33)

  • 2018     7/16     44%     +£ 3.11

  • 2019     4/21     19%     +£ 0.88

  • 2020     1/24      4%       (£21.38)

  • 2021     4/22     18%     +£ 4.80

  • 2022     6/22     27%     +£ 7.04

Comes into the month with a 1-2 at Nottingham at 16’s and 14’s.

GB NH

CHARLIE LONGSDON (ALL)

Back from last year where he bagged +£24 LSP

  • 2015     2/9      22%     +£ 0.00

  • 2016     2/15    13%     +£ 3.00

  • 2017     4/15    27%     +£ 2.25

  • 2018     4/17    24%     +£20.00

  • 2019     1/14     7%      +£ 1.00

  • 2020     3/21    14%      (£ 6.50)

  • 2021     2/9      22%     +£ 4.88

  • 2022     3/11    27%     +£15.50

Plenty of early price gains and comes into the month on the back of a winner.

PETER BOWEN (ALL)

Back from last month and last year and he made a profit in both.

  • 2017     7/29     24%     +£ 9.25

  • 2018    10/40    25%     +£56.53

  • 2019     5/32     16%      (£ 2.75)

  • 2020     0/39       0%      (£39.00)

  • 2021     4/25      16%     (£ 2.15)

  • 2022     4/13      31%    +£ 2.08

We wrote off 2020 as Covid clearly had an effect of his performance, we were level in 2021 and made a profit with him in 2019 despite the SP figure, another profit last year so we stick with him.

IRISH FLAT

P TWOMEY (ALL)

Another returnee from last year where he gave a small profit, a 50% strike rate in June bodes well.

  • 2018     1/4     25%     +£ 3.50

  • 2019     0/2       0%      (£ 2.00)

  • 2020     6/23   26%     +£12.95

  • 2021     3/8     38%     +£ 0.32

  • 2022     3/15   20%      (£ 1.13)

Wouldn’t be the strongest of figures but June and the fact that we made a profit on him last year suggests we should include.

IRISH NH

W MULLINS (ALL NH + 31ST GALWAY FLAT RUNNERS)

So last year I made a note to bet all his runners at the Galway Festival (NH and Flat) and one day of that is this month.  He made us a profit with his NH runners last July and also last month.

  • 2013     10/31     32%     +£ 3.49

  • 2014     14/31     45%     +£10.66

  • 2015     14/51     27%      (£16.23)

  • 2016     18/44     41%     +£12.54

  • 2017     16/43     37%     +£ 4.72

  • 2018     20/39     51%     +£25.37

  • 2019      8/27      30%      (£ 6.63)

  • 2020     10/42     24%      (£ 8.72)

  • 2021     11/63     17%      (£ 0.75)

  • 2022     17/72     24%      (£13.52)

Plenty of potential with early prices especially at Galway where he’ll be mob handed, our own figures were +£4.18 last year and that didn’t include his 3 Galway flat winners.

Good Luck as always, all comments are welcome.

Horse Racing Trainers to Follow in June 2023

June

We move into the summer and one of the most exciting months of the year for flat fans with the Derby, Oaks at Epsom and the 5 day Royal Ascot meeting.

At the time of writing we have had a losing May but we still sit at an overall profit for the year which is really good considering we were running at around (£130) LSL this time last year.  June was the month when everything changed, 7/8 winning trainers and a massive 170 LSP.

All 8 are back and we have a couple of additions that should make it a really interesting month.

GB FLAT TURF

CHARLIE APPLEBY (ALL)

Returns from last year after bagging us a +£40 LSP

  • 2017     9/52     17%     +£13.63

  • 2018     8/49     16%      (£ 3.75)

  • 2019    12/41    29%      (£ 6.64)

  • 2020    17/66    26%     +£ 1.34

  • 2021    11/43    26%     +£ 9.86

  • 2022    17/69    25%    +£12.05

Stats that are improving year on year and surprising good early price gains, will give plenty of interest at Epsom and Ascot.

JOHN & THADY GOSDEN (ALL)

Another back from last year where he managed a +£45 LSP

  • 2017     13/78     17%     +£ 3.21

  • 2018     16/74     22%      (£22.84)

  • 2019     12/60     20%      (£19.61)

  • 2020     32/116   28%     +£ 8.04

  • 2021     17/76     22%      +£53.59

  • 2022     18/71     25%      +£ 8.15

Massive early price gains, they were largely due to a horse called Morning Poem that we bet at 41/1 on the exchanges and it returned at just 10’s

HARRY & ROGER CHARLTON (2&3YO’S)

Again back from last year, just +£11 LSP but still a nice return.  Another who now shares the licence with his son.

  • 2015     8/33     24%     (£11.59)

  • 2016     7/26     27%    +£12.25

  • 2017     7/28     25%     (£ 3.90)

  • 2018     8/25     32%    +£ 3.11

  • 2019     4/31     13%     (£12.35)

  • 2020     6/30     19%    +£ 2.23

  • 2021     8/37     22%     (£ 0.89)

  • 2022     5/28     18%    +£10.25

Really solid stuff going back 8 years, we made a profit in 2019 (due to a 25’s winner) and 2021.  Ignore his older horses, their record is relatively poor.

CHARLIE JOHNSTON (2YO’S)

Charlie holds the licence on his own now after a brief flirtation with sharing it with his dad, I’m sure his dad still has plenty of influence so I’m confident we can rely on these figures which go back 9 years.

  • 2014     12/35     34%     +£35.29

  • 2015     16/65     25%      (£ 9.29)

  • 2016     17/61     28%     +£ 6.45

  • 2017     13/57     23%     +£14.78

  • 2018     15/55     27%      (£ 5.56)

  • 2019     12/43     28%     +£22.07

  • 2020      6/42      14%      (£21.76)

  • 2021      6/33      18%      (£ 6.40)

  • 2022     11/35     31%     +£18.40

I’m happy to excuse anyone’s figures in 2020 with Covid causing havoc in some schedules and in 2021 he had loads of big priced 2nd’s which were highlighted in last year's blog.  Our faith was rewarded with +£40 LSP from our early price figures and I expect more of the same this year.

CHARLIE FELLOWS (ALL)

The first trainer who wasn’t here last year, he has figures to match them though.

  • 2019      5/25     20%     +£51.75

  • 2020      6/33     18%     +£48.85

  • 2021      5/27     19%     +£18.63

  • 2020      4/29     14%      (£ 6.40)

Cracking stuff until last year and that wasn’t horrendous, there was a tiny case for not including his 2yo’s but such a small sample convinced me to leave them in.

IRISH FLAT TURF

JOHNNY MURTAGH (ALL)

Nice to have a bit of interest over the water and this guy provides plenty.

  • 2018     10/40     25%     +£13.29

  • 2019      4/44       9%       (£ 2.50)

  • 2020     12/63     19%     +£17.17

  • 2021      8/36      22%     +£ 9.70

  • 2022      5/57        9%     +£ 8.00

Even when his strike rate has dropped his LSP has been reasonable so there shouldn't be much risk, he’s definitely a trainer to get on early as his horses can be gambled.

IRISH NH

HENRY DE BROMHEAD (ALL)

While we’re in Ireland, back from last year where he made a tiny loss.

  • 2017     7/38      18%     +£19.38

  • 2018    11/55      20%     (£ 8.63)

  • 2019     7/35       20%    +£ 7.13

  • 2020     5/24       21%    +£ 1.38

  • 2021    12/51      24%    +£ 1.64

  • 2022      6/38      16%     (£ 1.00)

Comes into the month on the back of a good May, no reason why his form should change.

WILLIE MULLINS (ALL)

No surprise to see Mullins in the blog again, some solid figures considering all his big guns will have been put away for the winter.

  • 2016     8/19     42%     +£ 6.07

  • 2017     7/28     25%      (£ 0.18)

  • 2018    10/34    29%      (£ 6.15)

  • 2019     6/15     40%      (£ 2.94)

  • 2020     3/6       50%     +£ 7.25

  • 2021     9/22     41%     +£ 9.35

  • 2022     9/22     41%      (£ 0.95)

Unbelievable strike rate and you get a little more wiggle room than you might think in terms of early price gains, especially when he goes mob handed into races.  Comes into the month with 6 winners from his last 11 runners.

GB NH

NICKY HENDERSON (ALL)

Back from last year and last month where he wasn’t at his brilliant best.

  • 2014      8/21     38%     +£ 6.46

  • 2015      0/5        0%       (£ 5.00)

  • 2016      6/20     30%     +£10.85

  • 2017    11/21      52%     +£ 3.57

  • 2018     5/17       29%     (£ 1.67)

  • 2019     8/29       28%    +£ 0.16

  • 2020     No Runners

  • 2021     8/27      30%     +£ 4.07

  • 2022     2/10      20%      (£ 0.50)

Our own figures were +£3.50 LSP so no reason to discard him, hopefully some of his missing May winners turn up in June.

SEAMUS MULLINS (ALL)

Another back from last year and last month but he had a fantastic May.

  • 2015     4/14     29%     +£38.00

  • 2016     3/15     20%     +£ 7.00

  • 2017     1/13      8%       (£10.63)

  • 2018     5/27     19%     +£ 9.00

  • 2019     3/19     16%      (£ 0.50)

  • 2020     No Runners

  • 2021     2/12     17%      +£ 2.00

  • 2022     4/10     40%      +£15.20

He had some massive priced placed horses in May, if he can get one of those over the line it would be great.

PETER BOWEN (ALL)

Last up this month an old favourite, Peter Bowen got me into this back in the day with his Summer jumpers and he can  be relied upon even now when the sun shines.

  • 2016     7/28     25%      +£ 1.75

  • 2017     9/26     35%      +£21.95

  • 2018    13/39    33%      +£10.52

  • 2019     5/44     11%      +£11.10

  • 2020     No Runners

  • 2021     9/33     27%      (£ 1.93)

  • 2022     6/20     30%     +£ 4.49

Get on early with this guy, we made +£67.50 LSP in 2019 (6 times the SP!).

Busy month ahead, hopefully we can get back on track, as always any comments or questions leave below.    Good Luck!
