What is the WTA Finals Tournament ?
The WTA Finals is an end of season championship event featuring the top ranked Women's tennis players from the Women's Tour Association (WTA). There is a Singles tournament and Doubles tournament with players earning ranking points throughout the year via their performances in the WTA scheduled events and four majors. The top 8 ranked players qualify for the Singles event and the top 8 doubles pairs qualify for the Doubles tournament.
Although the WTA Finals is not one of the major slam events (US Open, Australian Open, French Open & Wimbledon) it is considered to be the end of season championships thus carrying huge prize money of $5 million. The tournament has undergone a few tweaks including a change of name since it was first staged in 1972 having also been known as the WTA Tour Championships.
What is the WTA Finals format ?
The WTA Finals Singles & Doubles format is a round robin first stage with the eight players (singles) and pairs (doubles) split into two groups of four and each player/pair in their group playing each other once. All WTA Finals matches are best of three sets and the top two players/pair in each group after their three matches proceed to the Semi Finals where the winner of each group will play the runner up from the other group. The Semi Final winners will go head to head in the final to determine the 2023 WTA Finals Singles & Doubles champions.
